Scroll through TikTok in Thailand for more than a few seconds and a product will eventually show up with a price tag attached. That feature is TikTok Shop, and since launching in Thailand in 2022 it has grown into one of the platforms overseas buyers ask Thai Nexus about most. Here is what TikTok Shop actually is, where the model came from, and how it compares to Shopee and Lazada.
What is TikTok Shop, and how is it different from regular TikTok?
TikTok Shop is the marketplace built directly into the TikTok app, not a separate platform. It launched in Thailand in 2022 alongside four other Southeast Asian markets, letting sellers list products, run livestreams, and let viewers buy without ever leaving the video feed.
Growth since then has been fast. TikTok Shop Thailand’s gross merchandise value more than tripled year over year in the first quarter of 2025, reaching $2.5 to $3 billion for the quarter and outgrowing both the US and Indonesian markets in percentage terms during that period.
Why does TikTok feel like a shopping app now?
TikTok calls this model shoppertainment, its own term for content-driven commerce where entertainment and the purchase decision happen inside the same scroll, across in-feed videos, livestreams, and product showcase tabs.
The format has landed especially well in Thailand. 73 percent of Thai online shoppers say they have used livestream commerce to buy something, one of the highest adoption rates anywhere outside China.
Where did this come from? Is Douyin the same as TikTok?
Douyin and TikTok are not the same app, though they share a parent company, ByteDance. Douyin launched in China in September 2016; TikTok, the international version, followed about a year later, expanded further after ByteDance’s 2017 acquisition of the lip-sync app Musical.ly.
A common shorthand says Douyin invented livestream shopping. That is not quite accurate. Livestream e-commerce in China actually started with the fashion platform Mogujie in 2016, and was popularized that same year by Alibaba’s Taobao Live during its Singles’ Day shopping festival. Douyin entered the category later and took years to catch up, only overtaking Taobao’s share of China’s livestream commerce GMV by 2022.
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 2016 | Mogujie pioneers livestream shopping in China; Taobao Live popularizes it via Singles’ Day |
| 2016 | Douyin launches in China under ByteDance |
| 2017 | TikTok launches internationally; ByteDance acquires Musical.ly |
| 2018 | Musical.ly merges into TikTok, unifying the global app |
| 2022 | Douyin overtakes Taobao in China’s livestream commerce GMV share; TikTok Shop launches in Thailand |
| 2025 | TikTok Shop Thailand’s quarterly GMV passes $2.5 billion |
Is TikTok Shop really bigger than Shopee and Lazada in Thailand?
Not yet at the overall marketplace level, though it is closing the gap fast. A 2024 government survey found TikTok had become Thailand’s top online shopping platform among shoppers under 30.
That finding drew real skepticism from longtime Thailand residents, who pointed out that Shopee and Lazada still dominate by volume. Order data from Thai Nexus customers lines up with that skepticism more than the survey headline: Shopee draws the largest share of requests by a wide margin, Lazada is second, and LINE Shopping holds third. TikTok Shop requests have been climbing quickly in recent months, but have not yet overtaken LINE Shopping for that third spot.
The national numbers tell a similar story at the regional level. Shopee held 48 percent of Southeast Asia’s e-commerce market in 2023, with Lazada at 16.4 percent; TikTok Shop and the Tokopedia stake TikTok acquired that year each accounted for 14.2 percent, a combined 28.4 percent that puts the two together in second place regionally.
How does TikTok Shop actually work in Thailand?
Buyers browse and purchase entirely inside the TikTok app. A product surfaces in a short video, a livestream, or the shop tab, and checkout happens without leaving that screen.
Sellers fulfill orders through the same courier network used across Thai e-commerce, so a TikTok Shop parcel moves through the country the same way a Shopee or Lazada parcel does.
Can overseas buyers use TikTok Shop Thailand?
In principle, yes, the same way overseas buyers already use Shopee or Lazada Thailand. TikTok Shop does not ship internationally on its own, so a Thailand address and a forwarding step are what make a purchase from abroad possible.
Overseas buyers who want to shop TikTok Shop Thailand face the same obstacle as they do on Shopee or Lazada: no international shipping at checkout. The solution is also the same. Thai Nexus provides the Thailand address, handles the order, consolidates the parcel, and ships it onward. TikTok Shop is still the less obvious corner of an app most people know as entertainment first, but the process waiting behind it has not changed.

Is Douyin the same as TikTok?
No. They are separate apps built by the same parent company, ByteDance. Douyin serves the Chinese market and launched first, in September 2016, while TikTok is the international version that launched roughly a year later.
Does TikTok Shop ship outside Thailand?
No. TikTok Shop operates as a country-specific marketplace, so an order placed on TikTok Shop Thailand ships to a Thailand address by default, the same way a Shopee Thailand or Lazada Thailand order would. A proxy buying service like Thai Nexus solves this by placing the order on the customer’s behalf and shipping the consolidated parcel onward internationally.
What is shoppertainment?
Shoppertainment is TikTok’s own term for content-driven commerce, where entertainment and the purchase decision happen inside the same scroll. It spans in-feed videos, livestreams, and product showcase tabs, all without the viewer leaving the app.
Is TikTok Shop available in Thailand?
Yes. TikTok Shop launched in Thailand in 2022, alongside Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, and has since become one of its fastest-growing Southeast Asian markets.
Can I buy from TikTok Shop Thailand if I do not live there?
Not directly through your own TikTok account, since checkout requires a Thailand address. Thai Nexus can place the order on a customer’s behalf using its own Thailand-based access, then consolidate and ship the item abroad, the same proxy buying process it already uses for Shopee and Lazada.
Did Douyin invent livestream shopping?
No. Livestream e-commerce in China started with Mogujie in 2016 and was popularized that year by Taobao Live. Douyin entered the category later and did not overtake Taobao’s share of livestream commerce GMV until 2022.
Is TikTok Shop bigger than Shopee in Thailand?
Not yet. Shopee still leads by volume in Thailand and across Southeast Asia, with Lazada in second place. TikTok Shop is growing quickly but, based on Thai Nexus’s own order data, has not yet passed LINE Shopping for third place.
How can I get an order from TikTok Shop Thailand delivered to another country?
The most reliable route is a Thailand-based proxy buying service that places the order locally and forwards it once it clears. Thai Nexus already had some customer requesting a purchase from TikTok Shop. The same process it already runs for Shopee and Lazada orders should extend to TikTok Shop without any changes on the customer’s end.
